2019 Gérard Raphet, 'Clos Vougeot' Grand Cru, Burgundy, France

Producer: Raphet, making old vine Burgundy (many vines are over 100 years of age) around the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, winemaking ways passed down through 4 generations. Gérard took over from his father Jean in 2002, today Virginie, a trained oenologist, works alongside her father both in the field & in the cellar.

Farming: sustainable practices

Place: the single grand cru wall-enclosed vineyard in the heart of the cote de Nuits, named after the river, Vouge.

Varietal: Pinot Noir from vines between 60 & 80 years of age

Soil: gravel over limestone

Winemaking: Fermentation with indigenous yeast, aged in old french oak barrels for 18 months, bottled unfined & unfiltered.

Tasting Notes: Earth - Red Currant - Liquorice
