Producer: Meinklang is a family run mixed-farm, Angela & Werner Michlits run the winery side of things, tending vineyards in Burgenland & Hungary. The Michlits family also produce a variety of crops including fruit orchards, herbs & flowers, ancient grains, as well as some beer production. They are the largest biodynamic farm in Central Europe & have managed to scale up without losing their foundational values, their herd of Angus cattle featured on their labels, as well as a herd of sheep, provide organic fertilizer for live soils, a full circle of life within the vineyards & farm lands.
Place: Located in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the National Park Neusiedlersee, Seewinkle, in the region of Burgenland, East Austria bordering Hungary.
Cultivation: Biodynamic, Demeter Certified.
Varietal: Blaufränkisch – From German Blue Frankish (noble variety), thought to be a crossing between Blaue Zimmettraube & Weißer Heunisch (Gouais Blanc).
Soil: Sandy loam, rocky topsoil.
Winemaking: Hand harvest, 10 day spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, gentle press, aged for 8 months in oak barrels & stainless steel, bottled without fining or filtration.
