Producer: Maurizio Marchetti, 5th generation winemaker, a doctor of agronomy, continues the family tradition, running Azienda Agricola Marchetti. He has introduced modern technologies, still keeping with the traditional wine making style of the region – using long maceration & maturation time. He is the great-great grandson of an Italian spice trader, who helped establish the Marche Conero DOC.
Place: Maurizio lives in Ancona, making wine in the heart of the Rosso Conero DOCG, southern Marche, Central Italy. In this area red grapes are grown closer to the sea, while white grapes are a little further inland. He owns 8 hectares of Verdicchio, in Castelli di Jesi on the south side of the Esino river, & a single 16 hectare site of primarily Montepulciano in his hometown Ancona, by the Adriatic sea.
Soil: Calcareous & clay/Marl
Name: Bonomi – the label dons the ancient arms of Bonomi’s family crest
Winemaking: Long maceration, ‘Governo alla Toscana- refermentation with fresh must after maceration & alcoholic fermentation’ matured for 16 months in French Barrique, followed by 12 months in bottle.
Varietal: 100% Montepulciano, technically Riservas must be at least 85% & allowed a max of 15% Sangiovese, however the Marchetti prefers to make the monovarietal.
Tasting Notes: Bold – Sweet & Savory Spice – Oakey undertones – Ripe Tannin
